We're Safeguarding Mississippi's Water—Now and for the Future

Across the country, many institutes are dedicated to water research—but only one exists solely to serve Mississippi. At the Water Resources Research Institute at Mississippi State University, that mission is our daily focus.
Our strength lies not just in our expertise, but in our adaptability and collaborative spirit. Water resource issues are growing increasingly complex and addressing them requires deep teamwork—both within our institute and with partners across MSU and beyond.
This cross-disciplinary approach allows us to take on a wide range of challenges: improving irrigation methods for agriculture, conducting utility rate studies, and helping reduce childhood lead exposure through our SipSafe program.
We're also proud to lead the Mississippi Well Owner Network, which focuses on unregulated water systems. By offering testing, training, and resources for private well owners, we're helping ensure safe drinking water reaches every corner of the state.
No matter the lens—public health, agriculture, infrastructure, or policy—the work we do directly improves quality of life for Mississippians. And through strong ties to sister institutes and national partners, we're bringing cutting-edge research and best practices home to support sustainable water management across the state.
In this issue of WATERMARKS, you'll meet some of the professionals turning our mission into real-world impact. Whether it's water from the tap or water to grow our crops, our team is committed to protecting one of Mississippi's most vital resources.
