Trainer Combines Business Smarts with a Heart for Service

When Kelsey Trainer stepped into the role of business manager for the Water Resources Research Institute last November, she brought more than a strong résumé—she brought a passion for work that makes a meaningful difference.
"Before I started this job, I had no idea that WRRI is Mississippi's official water institute," she said. "We conduct in-depth research on water quality and routinely test water in schools and childcare facilities, because access to clean, safe water is fundamental for everyone. We also support agricultural research, which allows our team to study crops and other vital natural resources."
Trainer previously worked in both the Student Affairs and Academic Affairs divisions at Mississippi State University, where she gained extensive experience in counseling services, academic administration and the university's financial systems.
"That background helped a lot," she said. "I came into this job already familiar with invoicing, billing, contracts, purchasing, inventory—many of those processes are consistent across departments."
What's different, though, is WRRI's heavy reliance on research funding. Trainer quickly got up to speed managing a complex mix of funding sources—from federal grants awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Geological Survey to state appropriations and legislative budget processes.
Her attention to detail in reconciling accounts, tracking grant spending, and ensuring compliance has been vital to keeping WRRI's operations running smoothly.
"I hadn't realized just how extensively MSU pursues grant funding across the entire institution until I joined the research division," said Trainer. "While I had some previous training in grant submissions and reporting, this role has deepened my understanding of how critical research funding is to both the university and WRRI."
"I'm excited to contribute to that mission, and I'm committed to continuing to learn and grow as we seek out new funding opportunities," she said. "A key part of my job is ensuring the accuracy of financial data and maintaining full compliance with all guidelines governing the use of research and university funds."
A native of Starkville, Trainer was inspired to study business by her parents. She earned an associate degree in liberal arts from East Mississippi Community College, a bachelor's degree in business administration from Mississippi University for Women and a master's degree in instructional technology from Mississippi State University.
Along with her knowledge and experience, she brings a spirit of teamwork and pride in WRRI's mission.
"I love interacting with my coworkers—they're some of the coolest, most brilliant people to work with," she said. "I've always enjoyed learning how things work, how to manage money, and how to keep things organized. Working at the Institute is a perfect fit for who I am and what I enjoy doing."
